Warehouse Fumigation Service is applied for controlling various pests in soil, structures and in durable commodities. Warehouse Fumigation Service enters the insect mainly by way of respiratory system and the poisoning of insects is influenced by their rate of respiration. Insect respiratory system consists of spiracles and tracheae and trace holes that are distributed throughout the insect body. In mammals, exchange of gases i.e. transfer of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place in a centralized place calls lungs whereas in insects this happens throughout the insect body. To a certain extent, gas exchange takes place through the skin also (cutaneous respiration). Once entered into the insect body, the fumigant exerts its toxic effect by affecting the enzyme systems and or nervous system.

In a storage system, fumigation is used:

• As an adjunct to storage hygiene to ensure that stocks entering storage are free of infestations.
• As a curative treatment when other physical and chemical pest control measures fail to control infestations
• As a mandatory requirement in trade and in quarantine.

Fumigation cannot be carried out unless:

• Trained operators are available
• The enclosure can be sealed to an adequate standard.
• Worked and other persons can be excluded from the enclosure.
• Fumigant can be safety aired/ventilated from the enclosure after the treatment is over.

Fumigation is carried out in an airtight enclosure, which may be:

• Temporary enclosures as in sheeted or cover fumigation of grain stacks.
• Movable enclosures ( Shipping containers, road/rain vehicles, and barges/ships)
• Fixed enclosures, which include fumigation chambers (made of metal/ concrete/bricks/mud and plaster), silo bins, storage sheds, whole godowns, and flour mills.
